BACK O' THE MOON: Listening Across Generations: The backstage of history: jazz, photography, and the making of Black modernist South Africa

16 February - 30 April 2026
  • Peffers Fine Art is proud to present a tightly curated exhibition of South African Black Modernist photography, drawn from six pivotal artists and archives: Drum, Bob Gosani, Alf Kumalo, Peter Magubane, G.R. Naidoo, and Gopal Naransamy. The exhibition centres on jazz as both subject and setting – clubs, halls, bars, rehearsals, and backstage rooms where sound became sanctuary and culture became strategy.

In mid-century South Africa, jazz was far more than entertainment. It operated as a social language and a living infrastructure – an interlinked network of spaces where Black intelligentsia and creatives (often overlapping) could gather, exchange ideas, and imagine freedoms denied in public life. These photographs are therefore not simply music pictures; they are portraits of community, style, intellect, courage, and joy under pressure – images made from within, with dignity and immediacy.

The works in this collection do not merely illustrate a period; they help author it. They record the lived texture of a society shaped by apartheid’s brutal constraints and, simultaneously, the fierce creativity that refused those constraints. Figures of the era appear not as distant monuments but as working artists and citizens –

moving between glamour and grind, celebration and threat, artistry and activism.

This body of work offers an institution the opportunity to foreground photography as primary historical evidence as well as modernist artistic production. The collection speaks directly to questions of cultural memory and the politics of visibility, while also demonstrating the formal innovation of photographers working under extraordinary social conditions.

To collect, conserve, and exhibit these photographs is an act of stewardship. They are primary documents that hold cultural memory, political testimony, and aesthetic invention together – works to be preserved not only for what they show, but for what they made possible: the continuities between jazz, modernism, resistance, and the unfinished project of freedom.
