Hessian is ordinarily valued for utility – it packages agricultural goods, absorbs wear and is then discarded. Phokojoe reverses that economic life. Printed trade marks and damage become evidence, while hand labour converts cheap packaging into an object of attention and value. The title makes memory itself sound like a commodity – something stored, transported and exchanged – yet the work resists easy ownership. Its histories belong to workers, households and routes of movement that the commodity system usually leaves unnamed.
