Made in 1993, Vani is from Villa’s important body of late editioned steel sculptures, through which a language developed over decades of public and one-off commissions became available to a wider circle of collectors. This example, numbered 1/9, is part of a deliberately limited edition that brought the logic of the multiple into steel fabrication rather than conventional bronze casting. Each work still required cutting, welding and surface finishing, preserving the role of workshop skill within the series. As such, Vani records an inventive meeting of industrial making, artistic continuity and a broader model for circulating sculpture.
