Villa’s titles in this body frequently resemble personal names. Tibor therefore belongs to a striking category – a numbered edition that is also treated as an individual. This tension reflects the wider economics of twentieth-century sculpture. Editioning allowed artists and dealers to place a recognised design with more than one collector, while steel fabrication preserved the evidence of workshop labour. Serial production is not simply the opposite of originality here; it is part of the work’s material and commercial history.
