INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Internship: Cataloguer, Registrar, Digital & Design Support (6-Months)Location: Cape Town
Duration: 6-months fixed-term (with possibility of full-time placement)
Peffers Fine Art is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented intern to support its cataloguing, registrar, digital, and design operations. This is a unique opportunity to gain professional experience in a leading gallery and research consultancy specialising in Modern and Contemporary art from Africa and the diaspora. We are looking for a conscientious and driven person to grow with us, gain hands-on mentorship, and be part of shaping art history.
Key Responsibilities
The intern will play a central role in the operations of Peffers Fine Art, working across cataloguing, registrar duties, and digital/web development. Alongside supporting the documentation and care of artworks, a major focus of the role is the management and growth of PFA’s digital platforms, especially its website and social media. The successful candidate will act as webmaster, building and maintaining pages for exhibitions, artists, and artworks; developing the site’s functionality; and helping transform it into a sales-primed, e-commerce-ready platform.
1. Cataloguer & Registrar
• Catalogue artworks, ensuring accurate documentation and metadata.
• Conduct condition reports and edit images.
• Enter and update artwork data in databases and stock records.
• Manage inventory: maintain and develop accurate records of all stock, consignments, and new productions.
• Track artworks: keep detailed records of works sold, delivered to clients, on consignment, on approval, and under the care of PFA.
• Consignments: record and manage consignments both held by PFA, off-site, and still in the possession of clients.
• Shipping & logistics: maintain clear records of artworks in transit, delivered to clients, and handed over to third-party service providers.
• Artwork care: assist in the professional handling, wrapping, and packing of artworks, ensuring they are safely stored, moved, or prepared for transport.
• Storage management: oversee efficient and secure storage of artworks within shelving and storage facilities, maintaining order and accessibility.
2. Digital & Technical Support
• Act as webmaster for Peffers Fine Art’s digital presence, ensuring the website (www.peffersart.com) is dynamic, functional, and visually aligned with the gallery’s identity.
• Build and refresh dedicated pages for exhibitions, online viewing rooms, artists, artworks, news, and press, ensuring all pages are engaging, intuitive, and sales-ready.
• Develop the website’s functionality with a focus on e-commerce integration, ensuring that the site can act as a platform for direct sales, client engagement, and online transactions.
• Regularly update the homepage with new content, marketing features, and news to keep the site current and appealing to clients, collectors, and institutions.
• Collaborate with the team to expand content — including artist biographies, press material, and publications — optimising for search visibility and audience growth.
• Maintain and update third-party digital platforms (Artsy, Latitudes) with consistency across branding, pricing, and content.
• Ensure accurate and timely data entry across all platforms, maintaining high professional standards and a seamless user experience.
3. Social Media & Content Development
• Contribute to management of social media accounts, developing content, creating, and scheduling content 2–3 times per week.
• Support SEO strategies and manage paid advertisements.
4. Data Capturing & Administration
• Update artist bios and CVs in the database and on the website.
• Capture previous offers and maintain accurate sales records.
5. Graphic Design & Marketing Support
• Create design assets for web, social media, and promotional use.
• Assist in preparing sales proposals and art fair applications.
6. General Office Support
• Assist with day-to-day office maintenance, ensuring the workspace is clean, tidy, and well-presented at all times.
• Provide general administrative support as required.
• Be proactive and helpful in all aspects of gallery operations, even when tasks fall outside the immediate scope of the job description.
• Ensure visitors and guests are greeted and welcomed warmly into the gallery environment.
7. Client-Facing & Professional Conduct
• Always maintain a neat and professional appearance, presenting oneself in a manner appropriate to a gallery environment.
• Be courteous, respectful, and warm towards clients, colleagues, and service providers.
• Assist in being hospitable to clients and guests.
• Support in handling and carrying artworks during client viewings, installations, and events.
• Approach all tasks with a positive, friendly, and helpful attitude, ensuring that clients and colleagues alike experience a welcoming and professional atmosphere.
Ideal Candidate
• Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
• Proficiency with databases and digital platforms (experience with Artlogic database and CMS, and Artsy is advantageous).
• Experience with social media management, SEO, and digital marketing.
• Basic graphic design skills (Adobe Suite or Canva preferred).
• Interest in African Modern art, contemporary art, museums, and cultural institutions.
• Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines.
Remuneration
• Monthly stipend: R10,000–R12,000 (dependent on experience and skills).
• This is a 6-month internship, with the possibility of a full-time role thereafter.
