Villa did not frame these sculptures as direct political statements, so the date should not be used to force an allegory. It is nevertheless meaningful. The work was produced within a society whose public space, cultural institutions and patronage systems were racially structured. Its modernist authority can therefore be valued while also being examined as part of the visual culture of that unsettled period.
