This original carved panel is the matrix for Feni’s accompanying Mythical Bird impression. It dates from an important early phase of his career, immediately preceding the completion and first exhibition of African Guernica at Gallery 101 in Johannesburg in 1967. The panel provides primary evidence of Feni’s use of woodcut alongside drawing, sculpture and ceramics during the 1960s.
