This drawing stands out as an intricate and detailed piece, a rarity within Dumile Feni's body of work from this period. Known for his typically whimsical drawings characterised by a minimalistic approach to line and detail, and a swift production style, this particular work deviates from the norm. Created in Durban within the locale of Douglas Lane during Feni's inaugural exhibition in the region, it showcases extensive line work that imparts a robust impact, resulting in a piece rich in tone and texture. Its exceptional level of detail makes it a compelling example from this phase of Feni's career, with few comparable works available from this time, and those that exist are rarely offered for sale. This presents a unique opportunity to acquire a scarce specimen showcasing the detailed artistry of Feni's early work in South Africa. Adding to its allure is the fact that Feni's early South African pieces tend to perform exceptionally well in auctions, reflecting the market's preference for this particular period of his artistic evolution.
