Made during Phokojoe’s 2025 inquiry into home and belonging, Uvezandlebe I treats the family not as a fixed structure but as a social arrangement shaped by care, naming and legitimacy. Hessian links this intimate question to public history – it was the material of sacks, but also of shelters built when official housing failed. The work brings household and settlement into the same conversation, asking how people claim belonging when law, custom or institutions have placed them at the margin.
