The Roman Catholic church in Pella, in the Northern Cape, was a sanctuary for refugees in
the 18th and 19th centuries. Established by the London Missionary Society, the first church
on the site was attacked by a group of marauding San in 1815 and lay abandoned for much
of the 19th century. In the 1880s, Father Simon and Brother Wolf re-established a Catholic
church and community on the site, both of which survive to the present day. Throughout this
recent history, it has been a hallowed site for various indigenous communities engulfed in
ongoing struggles with each other and colonists.
