It holds clothing, bedding and shelter together, often through labour that is feminised, domestic and poorly valued. Phokojoe brings that labour forward rather than hiding it. Paired with hessian – a material made to carry loads – the title Burden opens onto the unequal distribution of care – who repairs, who supports, and whose work remains unnoticed because the structure continues to hold. Maintenance becomes part of the public record.
