The Italian word stallone means “stallion”, although Villa’s precise intended reference has not been documented. The title retains an Italian linguistic trace within a practice formed in South Africa. Created in 1992, the work sits between postwar European modernism and apartheid’s final crisis, and between the artist’s signature and the labour of a workshop. Its continued life depends on material systems – documentation, transport, installation and conservation – rather than on symbolic permanence alone.
