Uvezandlebe II extends the question from social status to inheritance. Phokojoe first encountered the manipulation of cloth through his mother, while his chosen material connects to Soweto residents who collectively made shelter from hessian in 1944. Kinship is therefore located in practices – stitching, sheltering, carrying and accommodating – rather than in descent alone. The work speaks to families and communities reorganised by migration, overcrowding and forced settlement, where belonging often had to be made materially before it was recognised politically.
