    The approximate date attached to Beno is itself useful evidence. Sculpture histories are often reconstructed from inscriptions, photographs, inventories and the memories of studios and dealers; uncertainty should be recorded rather than polished away. Produced around 1992, the work comes from Villa’s mature engagement with fabricated steel and a network that circulated his sculpture beyond one-off monuments. Its catalogue history reminds us that provenance is not paperwork added after the fact – it is part of how an artwork remains legible across generations.
